Modern History of China

Major Projected Events:

2009 - Construction is estimated to be completed on the Three Gorges dam, which will become the world's largest. The dam will create a lake 375 miles long and displace millions.

August 2008 – Olympics to be held in Beijing marking the first Olympics ever in China.


Recent Historical Events:

October 2003 - Astronaut Yang Lewei is sent into space as China's first astronaut. China becomes the third country to send an astronaut into space.

March 2003 - Hong Kong and much of South China is hit with SARs bird flu.

November 2001 - China joins the World Trade Organization.

December 1999 – Portugal returns control of Macao to China, thus ending the concessions by China.

July 1997 – The British government returns control of Hong Kong to China

1996 – China conducts missile tests from Xiamen near Taiwan to try and influence Taiwan’s presidential election.

1994 - China fixes its currency to the U.S. dollar at approximately 8.28 Yuan per Dollar.

1993 - Jiang Zemin becomes the President of China, replacing Yang Shangkun.

1993 - Construction begins on the Three Gorges dam, which will become the world's largest. The dam will create a lake 375 miles long and displace millions. Construction will be completed by 2009.

1966 to 1976 - Mao Zedong launches 10 year plan dubbed "The Cultural Revolution" which is a political and ideological reform that results in political, social and economic upheaval.

1958 - Mao Zedong launches the five plan dubbed "The Great Leap Forward" which collectivizes farming and new labor intensive industries are started. The plan is an economic disaster and is abandoned after only two years.

1950 - China joins the Korean War on the side of North Korea.

1950 - Tibet becomes part of China.

October 1, 1949 – People’s Republic of China established with Mao Zedong as its first President.
