China Demographics

Primer:  This our page on Chinese trends that will help you do business in China, import from China, export to China, and understanding Chinese culture and modern economic trends. We all know that there are more Chinese than any other ethnic group on Earth.  Not only does China have 1.3 billion people as of 2005 but there are also over 350 million Chinese emigrants living abroad who have Chinese last names.  But what is interesting is that China has been suffering an economic slump for 200 years.  However, that has changed and is changing quickly.  According to a recent repot by Merrill Lynch/Capgemini, China now has approximately 236,000 millionaires.  That's up 12% in one year and is only second in the world to the 14% growth in the U.S. last year. Furthermore, the Chinese is fastest growth population for luxury goods.

China land wise is one of the largest countries on Earth, ranking only fourth behind Russia, Canada and the United States.  Its natural resources is able to support 1.3 billion citizens.  One interesting note is that the Chinese population is younger on average than that of the United States and Europe.  This will start to change because of the country's one child policy that has been in existence since 1979.  The population growth will slow and its average will grow older but for the time a younger population is turning out more engineers and other professionals than the world has ever seen.
