What is a Chinese Visa?
A China Visa is a stamp or endorsement stamped by Chinese officials on a passport that allows the passport holder to visit China.  China visas are obtained through a visa service from the local consulates of China.  A "visit" is further defined as the reason for entry, usually business, tourist or transitory.  There are over 270 countries that offer visas and literally thousands of different types of visas available based upon country, type of visit, and length of visit. Visit the Chinese Embassy in America website to apply for a Chinese Visa and for a list of Chinese consulates in the United States.

Chinese consulates can usually issue a China Visa the day they receive it, provided its on a weekday. Thus, the time it takes to obtain a China Visa is entirely dependent on you (if you fill out the application) or your visa service if you are using one.

Consulate Fees are $80 for a Single Entry China Visa, $105 for a Double Entry China Visa, and $130 for a Multiple Entry China Visa. For more information on the different types of China Visas, look below.

Do I need a China Visa?
If you are traveling to mainland China, whether for business or tourism, you require a Chinese visa to be obtained from a consulate in advance of your trip. You are exempt from this requirement if you travel and stay only in Hong Kong or Macao for less than 30 days.

What is the difference between a Chinese tourist visa and China business visa?
China visas are issued according to the purpose of the trip; either tourism or business activities. In general, "tourist" visas are issued specifically for the purpose of travel for pleasure, while a "business" visa generally permits a traveler to engage in normal business-related activities (sales meetings, visiting a factory, negotiating agreements, etc.)

What are the different types of China Visa?
There are three kinds of China visas in regards to entry:

  • Single Entry China Visa - The single entry China visa is good for one time entry and is common for both a tourist China visa and a business China visa.

  • Double Entry China Visa - The double entry China visa is only for business travelers. You can enter China and reenter one more time. Remember you can only reenter one more time with this visa, hence the name double entry.

  • Multiple Entry China Visa - The multiple entry China visa means you can enter and reenter China as many times as you want within 30 days of your first entry. Similar to the Double Entry China visa, the Multiple Entry China visa is only available to business travelers.

Do I need any shots before entering China?
No shots are required to enter China. However, it is a good idea to check with your doctor especially for Hepitatus and TB. I can tell you when I lived in Beijing, every foreigner I knew (well over 200) caught dissentary and bronchitis. Our tip is that if you contract that go see a licensed Chinese doctor and get their "western" Chinese medicine because Pepto Bismo and all the other western medicines we took did not help a bit.

I travel to China frequently.  How do I obtain a multiple entry visa?
Multiple entry visas are granted for business purpose only.  You'll need to ask your business partners in China to contact the local government office to issue an invitation. The invitation has to be issued by the Foreign Ministry of Affairs and should be sufficient for the embassy or consulate to issue the visa.  However; issuance of a multiple entry visa is at the discretion of the consulate and having a invitation from the Foreign Ministry does not guarantee issuance of the multiple entry visa.
